In the Black community, rape, violence against women and sexual harassment are as much the legacy of slavery as is racism. Johnnetta Betsch Cole and Beverly Guy-Sheft all argue powerfully that the only way to defeat this legacy is to focus on the intersection of race and gender. Gender Talk examines why the race problem has become so male-centered and how this has opened a deep divide between Black women and men. The authors turn to their own lives, offering intimate accounts of their experiences as daughters, wives, and leaders. He visualizes her as a sex object, someone he can enjoy in bed, and one who can produce his children – at least one male child to continue his family line. In her anxiety to please, in her yearning to be recognized, in her desire to gain a prominent position in the family hierarchy, the woman longs for a son – her social redeemer, thus perpetrating male dominance and patriarchy. -Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen- (Uma 1). These words spoken by a black woman could very well have been uttered by an Indian woman. May be some of the troubles are different, may be the Indian woman was not uprooted, enslaved, and violated by the white man. But in her own way, she, the Indian woman, has carried the burden of the family, has slaved for the husband, her children, and her family – whether extended or nuclear. Like the Indo-Anglian woman, the Afro-American woman is -to use of Harlem, subjective, willful and complexly and compellingly human- (Uma 10). But -strong’ is what an Afro-American woman is commonly labeled as. Not strong as much as domineering what most people fail to realize is that historical reality automatically overrules the term domineering. In Africa, the conditions of the black race deteriorated under the rule of the white men. The main factor in this respect was the dislocation which affected the old village community and disturbed the natural balance between males and females. The black woman, aware of her man’s exploitative relationship with her, is unenthusiastic about the birth of a son. For her, feminity represents respectability, dependability. Since the age of Aristotle, patriarchy has been working on the assumption that women are incapable of rational thought and therefore, they are naturally inferior to men. Women constitute half the humanity. Women are being extolled in literature; the saying goes that there is a woman behind every successful man. Bacon accords a very significant place for woman in man’s life. His statement amply explains the concept, wives are young men’s mistresses; companions for middle age; and old men’s mistresses. In the life of man, woman plays a vital role as mother, sister and wife. But still, it is disputable whether woman is given a due place she deserves. All along, she is treated only as -the other’. She is considered as physically weak and very emotional in nature. So she cannot be independent to take decisions of her own as she is not mature enough to decide her future. Since most human societies are male-dominated, women are subjected to many social evils like -purdah’ system, female infanticide, child marriage, dowry system, enforced widowhood and denial of education. She is made to act as an unpaid domestic servant and is subjected to perpetual torture by a demanding husband, a ruthless mother-in-law and a nagging sister in law. It is said that man’s cruelty towards man is exceeded only by man’s cruelty to woman. Woman’s subjugation is master-minded by patriarchal systems. The patriarchal systems do not allow women to realize their aspirations and ambitions. Every girl is taught and brought up as a subordinate to the male member. She is made aware that she is different from a boy and so her aspirations and ambitions are different from those of boys. Boys are nurtured to grow up as ambitious, rational and dynamic. The girls are encouraged to cultivate qualities like grace, gentleness and docility. In order to bring out woman to the forefront and to fight for her liberty, feminist movement comes into existence. The main aim of the feminist’s movement is to liberate woman from all kinds of shackles which do not allow her to develop her full potential as a free and an autonomous individual. All Feminists are not necessarily women, as there are also men who fight for the rights of women. Thus feminism is a social, political and cultural movement that focuses on gender differences due to biological difference. It questions the rationale behind the culturally determined notions of superiority. It asserts that men have historically imposed their will on women to convince them of their inferiority. Wole Soyinka’s women are built on the African traditional setup. Though they are considered as an inferior subject in Africa, Soyinka’s women are equally treated with men. Soyinka’s play The Lion and Jewel is a spirited and ribald account of African village life that explores the conflicts between traditional and modern values, third World reality against first world ideals, and the power of men against the influence of women. The action is interspersed with raucous African song and dance. The visit of the photographer is told as a play within a play, a musical re-enactment with the villagers acting out the events of that day. Soyinka’s Sidi in The Lion and the Jewel opts for tradition. When the teacher Lakunle and Chief Baroka vie for her affection, at first she will have nothing to do with them. She is a free woman. Yet the kind of -westernization’ which Sidi might have adored is chafed at in Soyinka’s play. The pedantic schoolmaster’s ideas of what is -civilized’ are truly laughable. Lakunle promises Sidi that they will eat: Together we shall sit at table -Not on the floor – and eat, Not with fingers, but with knives And forks and breakable plates Like civilized beings. (9) Finally she agrees to marry Lakunle if he will pay the bride-price: I’ve told you, and I say it again I shall marry you today, next week Or any day you name But my bride-price must first be paid. (7)

The sympathies of the audience are entirely with Sidi. All through the play the use of mime, masquerade, and dance is most convincing, anticipating for instance Sidi’s seduction scene, emphasizing the virility of the Baroka and the tawdriness of the school teacher and the European photographer. Always, they become his wives or concubines by the next day. As a woman in a polygamous society, Sadiku has been trained to put with many things which may hurt her self-respect as an individual. She has not merely to put up with the favourites her husband has been choosing from time to time, but also to invite the woman on whom his fancy falls to marry him. On the surface, she is loyal to her husband and, if her attempts to persuade Sidi are typical, she puts her heart and soul in recruiting new brides for her husband. But Soyinka portrays her individuality in revealing to us her long-standing resentment at sharing her husband with many women. Her stifled self-respect asserts itself in her dance of triumph at the supposed loss of manliness by Baroka and in her attempt to celebrate it by a mummer’s show: Sadiku: Ask no questions my girl. Just join my victory dance. Oh Sango my lord, who of us possessed your lightning and ran like fire through that lion’s tail- Sadiku: – Is Baroka not more of a man than you? And if he is no longer a man than what are you?… (33-34) Sadiku is interesting by herself, an old woman who is not soured by life and whom age has not deprived of high spirits. The Iyaloja, leader of the market women in Death and the King’s Horseman, taunts Elesin because he insisted on tasting a young girl on the eve of his death and allowed the taste to weaken his resolve. That this insistence was in itself startling, even unprecedented, is indicated in the earlier scene where he hints at his desire for the girl, who is already promised to the Iyaloja’s son. The Iyaloja dare not understand him, but he clarifies his meaning beyond doubt. The Elesin’s speech is sophistical, with its imagery of earth, seed and plantain shoots, its scorn of mere desire, its insistence upon his sanctity as a man already dedicated to death, and hence upon the sanctity of his wishes. But his desire is nevertheless apparent, and it is one which holds him to life instead of freeing him from it. It is also, although Soyinka does not emphasize this, profoundly contrary to the usual rituals of preparing oneself for a great spiritual task; rituals which stress abstinence, whether from food, drink or sex, rather than indulgence of senses which may cloud the will. Yet the Iyaloja grants his wish without a struggle, because she appears to accept his argument for its sanctity as coming from one already touched by the waiting fingers of out departed. Only when preparing him for the marriage bed does she remind him that it must also be the bed of death. In terms, in the play, the future is not really separable from the past, and must suffer whatever contamination today’s events may spill upon it. It is only in this restricted sense that the Iyaloja can tell us, in the play’s closing words: -Now forget the dead, forget even the living. Turn your mind only to the unborn- (219). Iyaloja gives sanction to the marriage of Elesin Oba and the young girl with the hope that any child born of the woman should be -neither of this world nor of the next. Nor of the one behind us. As if the timelessness of the ancestor world and the unborn have joined spirits to wring an issue of the elusive being of passage- Elesin!- (162). Iyaloja asserts her faith in the unborn. All the character roles in The Swamp Dwellers were very strong. Alu is shown as a very determined and focused woman. She shows many good characteristics in the story, but as a woman for that time, era and setting, her manor was quite different. Alu represents determination. This is determination in many ways. One side of her determination is to locate where she -believers’ her lost son Igwezu is. As any mother would do, she shows such determination to find him and will do whatever it takes to bring him home to the country. While discussing her son with her husband, Makuri, she shows her determination as she states: Alu: I’m going after him. I don’t want to lose him too. I don’t want him missing his foothold and vanishing without a cry, without a chance for anyone to save him- Alu: I’m going out to shout his name until he hears me- (83) The two women in the family – Igwezu’s mother, Alu and his wife, Desala – are sharply contrasted. The weakness and infidelity of Igwezu’s wife provide a contrast to the strength and virtue of his mother. Despite temptations from visiting traders, Alu had remained faithful to her husband. Similarly, the mutual understanding and affection between the old couple, Makuri and Alu, despite their bickering and finding fault with each other, contrast itself with the awful lack of the same between the young couple Igwezu and Desala. Soyinka’s Alu in The Swamp Dwellers is the strong figure hopelessly fettered by her rigid concept of tradition. Alu has her virtues in not being carried away by the glitter of city life or the lure of city-traders’ money. Makuri, Alu’s husband, had reason to be really proud of his steadfast wife, who -turned their traders’ heads but- kept her own- (108). In spite of her strength of character, Alu can exercise no influence over her twin sons. The story of Igwezu, one of the twins, is a story of poignant loss on all sides. He lives to lose his wife, Desala, to his brother in the city and loses his harvest to the flood and swamp in the village. Igwezu returns to the city, belonging neither to the village nor the city, which merely swallows another victim down its gargantuan throat. Once again Alu manifests her limitation by losing both her sons through her blind adherence to traditional values. Alu shows a mother’s concern for the safety of her sons who have ventured into the city and away from the maternal protection. One of her sons, Awuchike, has been away from home for ten years, and to his mother he is dead. Makuri scolds her: The older you get, the more of a fraud you become. Every day for the past ten years, you’ve done nothing but swear that your son was dead in the marshes. And now you sit there like a crow and tell me that you’re waiting for news about him. Alu: [stubbornly] I know he’s dead. (82) Although her husband understands the reason why the young will drift away from the land and tries to explain it to her – Awuchike got sick of this place and went into the city’ Alu remains firm in her conviction that he was drowned in the swamps. The assumption is that if he had stayed at home, she would have offered him the protection he needed. Soyinka’s women enjoy prestige in the hierarchy of marriage in The Lion and the Jewel. The second or third wife holds higher status over a single woman, the first wife maintains the most privilege among the women in the family. Traditionally, the first wife would choose her husband’s second and third wives and act as a go-between or Alarena, to propose the marriage. Sadiku in The Lion and the Jewel act as the go-between Sidi and Baroka and plays a major role in getting her married to Baroka. The final surrender of Sidi to Baroka is evidence of the victory of traditional African values over the modern European ones in the African context. The weakness and strength, infidelity and virtue are contrasted with the two women- Igwezu’s mother and his wife in The swamp Dwellers. The pain and agony of Alu moves the play to the theme of motherhood. The love for her lost sons and later the depressed Igwezu makes her remains faithful to her husband. It is understood that Soyinka’s women are built on the African traditional set up. Though they are considered as an inferior subject in Africa, Soyinka’s women are equally treated with men, sometimes these women direct men and advice them. For example Iyaloja in Death and the Kings Horseman represents traditional wisdom. Whereas Sidi in The Lion and the Jewel is a girl of high spirit and she respects the traditional values throughout the play. Finally Alu and Igwezu’s wife in The Swamp Dwellers remain faithful to their husbands. It is clear that women enjoy prestige in the traditional Nigerian society

Shape Retention – How Hugging The Curves Has Changed The Underwear Industry

In the shelf life of underwear, it is usually the shape and fit of underwear that gives way long before the fashion and design becomes outdated. Elasticity in the waist and leg bands or thinning of the fabric makes the underwear no longer functional and least of all attractive. Perhaps this was the reason for so few changes in underwear design in the last few decades. After all, if underwear was so short lived, why work to create new designs and styles that appeal, if their staying power did not warrant it? Designers of underwear have been exploring this factor as their designs have found a market niche and created a following among both men and women wearers. Changes in fabric use is now providing for underwear that can retain its shape and fit while still meeting fashion needs.

With the development of fabric engineering, fabrics can be created that meet the various specific fashion needs of different lines of clothing. Perhaps the greatest advancement has been in the area of elasticity use in underwear. As customers seek underwear that contours to their shape, rather than works against it, various combinations of fibers are used for this purpose. Initially, elastic was the only option to be included in underwear to allow for stretch and shape retention. Later, with advances in textile manufacturing, spandex (or elastane) fibers were blended in small percentages with other fabric fibers. Spandex, an anagram of expand, is often called by its most famous brand name title: Lycra, specifically developed by Dupont. It is a man-made elastane fiber known for its exceptional elasticity.

Textile news and analysis sites including Inteletex expound on the merits of elastane/spandex use in clothing manufacturing. Dr Ian Holme states on this site that: “Yarns containing elastane are continuing to make significant inroads into the knitted fabric market. The high stretch and rapid recovery properties of elastane provide unsurpassed elastic recovery properties which have been utilized by fabric and garment makers to provide elastic stretch and impart garment body clinging, shaping and shape retention, and silhouette shaping and slimming properties. Indeed, it’s now estimated that 35-40% of all apparel in developed markets may contain some elastane in filament form.”

To understand the importance of the feature of elasticity, one needs only to wander the sites, advertising sources and product descriptions for various underwear designers to see the many references to this feature. Calvin Klein lists “shape retention” as a feature descriptor of their flexible fit short. JM Intermode describes the “excellent stretch” and “high shape retention after frequent washings” of their Canadian designs. Armani includes “added spandex for additional comfort and shape retention.” Gossamer lists “lycra for shape retention” in their product descriptors. 2(x)ist made a commitment to the public demands for a “fabric with enhanced shape retention and stretch comfort” and developed a liquid cotton collection with DOW XLA in concert with DOW Chemicals. Finally, Alenver describes its collection’s “body defining comfort with 5% elastane providing shape retention and fit”. The difference in fabrication comes in the proportions of natural fibers verses elastane fibers used by the different designers.

Word on the street and customer reports are also important indicators for designers as to whether their products are meeting the customers’ needs. Alenver reports that customers are gushing about their products. After washing in hot water, after washing in cold water – their underwear is maintaining its original shape and fit. Rap musicians who have taken to the unique messaged collection from Alenver also site specific benefits to their underwear. They choose to wear their underwear underneath their swimsuits when swimming. Even with this additional exposure to chlorine and salt water, these customers maintain that the Alenver underwear still maintains its shape and fit. Alenver proudly states this is because of the combination of materials. The mix of 95% pure cotton, from the best cotton sources in Peru, provides comfort and 5% elastane provides shape retention and fit. Additionally, with more than a 1_-inch width, the elastic waistband and bra band stay put, even while they display their one word message. Messages are woven into the fabric of the waistband’s elastic for permanency, yet the elastic is lined for comfort and softness against the skin.

In today’s world, an active lifestyle is par for the course for most individuals. Having clothing that addresses and meets that need is a necessity and not just a preference. Clothing needs to move with the body, meet the physical demands the body requests of it, and then most importantly return to its original shape. Wearers need no longer worry about their underwear losing its fit and shape before losing its appeal and allure.

What’s in a Name Yuppies, Dinks or Dewks

For some reason or other, we coin generational phrases to put people in their place. Or, is it to define subcultures of certain patterns of behaviour?

Mobileers were a community of early two-way radio users. According to Wikipedia, the Mobileers popularized the technology that birthed the mobile phone.

Permanent installations in vehicles gave way to the portable Bag Phones, equipped with a cigarette lighter plug. You wouldn’t recognize the huge clunky piece of equipment these phones were, compared to the dinky pocket size we carry today. But I am getting ahead of myself.

In the early 1960’s there was a youth movement that evolved into the Hippies. Again according to Wikipedia, ‘Hippies originally were Beatniks’, or the black people. These people were black by nature, not by the colour of their skin. Even their clothes were black. They were losers. Their message was, “Danger is fun”.

Hippies were a group of people who moved into the Haight-Ashbury San Francisco area. Psychedelic rock, the sexual revolution, cultural diversity and drugs like cannabis and LSD, in order to explore alternative states of consciousness, became the hallmark of the Hippies. Flower Power symbolized their cry of “Make love not war”, as they handed out flowers to passersby.

They were the frontier group of the ‘Wild West’ of our modern culture. Their far reaching effects included health food, music festivals, through contemporary sexual concepts (free love) and the use of drugs.

Many were eco-friendly and the forerunners of the Greeny Movement. They were also pioneers of the cyberspace revolution.

Today every school kid has a mobile phone, though I often wonder who pays the bills. But when mobile phones were relatively unheard of, there rose a group of Male Yuppies – Young Urban Mobile Professionals.

They had a particular stance that went with the title, as did most subgroups. One hand raised to the ear; Their other hand protectively placed on their briefcase; Head cocked to one side; Eyes glazed over as they stared at the distant horizon; A noncommittal grimace on the face.

Of course they were seen to eat at all the Yuppy restaurants and naturally drove a Yuppy car. They were the symbol of all the young affluent professionals of the day. Where are the woman in this equation.

Evolution comes in many forms. However, I wonder if that is always the case. I peresonally believe they were the result of a group of very clever marketing gurus.

Either way, the Yuppy generation took over from the Baby Boomers – suburban, couple of kids, mortgage and the backbone of the community. That is after the Baby Boomers had dried out and come off the Grass, introduced through the Hippy stage.

Let’s not knock the Baby Boomers though. The Baby Boomers produced many a Lord Mayor or politician.

Strictly speaking the Baby Boomers may have been too long a period to be classically described as a ‘generation’. The baby boom lasted over a post-war period of 18 years.

Why we have to put a name to every generation is totally beyond me? I could never work out just where I belonged, even though I contributed to the Baby Boomer period.

In Russia the Baby Boomers were called the Sputnick Generation, from the Russians race in space. How the two became connected is totally beyond me?

It was the rise of the contraceptive pill that heralded in the end of the Baby Boomer period.

Double Employed With Kids – DEWKS – was the next prominent phase. Have a child, six weeks later dump the baby in the Creche/Child Care Centre and back to competing with your partner as to who brings home the most income.

The Yuppies become Yappies – Frustrated Yuppies having to deal with a couple of screaming kids, now that spanking children (corporal punishment) was being outlawed.

Sadly this was followed by the predictable KOOPF – Kids Of One Parent Families.

Next came the DINKS – Double Income No Kids. It became fashionable not to have kids. Why not, if you could no longer discipline them?

Dinks was more widely used than the usual generational term. There were Gay and Lesbian Dinks and a midget wrestler, Claude Giroux, took the stage name, Dink. The water had become decidedly muddied. No longer could you assume the person was with their husband or wife. It had become ‘partner’.

According to some experts, if the trend of Dinks continued, intelligent professionals would become another ‘dinosaur’. Extinct, due to the lack of DINKS not having children and reproducing themselves.

However, gays and lesbians, in same sex relationships, also contributed to the downturn in population growth.

Supposedly the DEWKS and DINKS are the privileged ones who have ‘Disposable Incomes’. That which the economists say gauges the state of the economy.

Let me ask you this though, does anyone have income that can be ‘disposed of’, like polystyrene containers, paper tissues and disposable plastic bags? That of course is before bio-degradable became fashionable.

Somewhere in the middle of all this we have the term Nerd. The original stereotypical Nerd was ‘white males with glasses and braces’, according to Wikipedia. You wouldn’t get away with such a term today, in our new found non-gender consciousness.

Nerd, or Nurd, was originally known as ‘knurd’, which is drunk spelled backwards. A nerd was a person who studied, as opposed to one who partied.

With the maturing advent of Cyber Space, the term Nerd has gained respectability. It is the Nerds of our world who drive Cyber Space.

Charles J. Sykes said, “Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.”

Then of course we always have the Trendys, who set the pace for the next generation. The feeding grounds of the latest fashion gurus and their high paid advertising junkies.

So we keep creating new terms, putting each generation into a neat little box. We also like to do the ‘crab trick’ – don’t let anyone get out of the box. Pull them back if it looks like they are escaping.

If you live long enough, chances are you will be around for quite a few of the names, in the cultural evolution. Or is it all plain rebellion to the established mores – status quo?

I want to add one more name to the list. Most of us only dream of being a Wyna. Better than being a Luza. If you have difficulty picking up what I am saying (writing) try speaking those two names out loud.

The world is full of Luzas, but in every generation there is a minority of Wynas, about 2%. Only those who dream big become a Wyna. What did the song say, ‘Climb every mountain, ford every stream…’?

Right now there is a generation of people who are chasing after a ‘Seachange’. When they go on holiday they yearn for cooling sea breezes. Some coastal communities have been classed officially as a Seachange area.

It was even reported that one such city was attempting to restrict the numbers of visitors that flooded it during holiday periods and stretched the amenities beyond their limit. Will they create a boarder around the city and produce passports? Another Berlin wall?

Wyna says there are children in Vanuatu and other geographically isolated areas, who are financially underpriviledged. Without help they will never have the opportunity to go to high school, because they live in a cashless society.

The Unicorn Tapestries A History

The myth of the unicorn has been with us since ancient China and is usually depicted as a large horse with a single horn projecting from the forehead and it has been represented in the art and writings of many ancient cultures throughout Asia and Europe.

By the Middle Ages Christian Europe had endowed the unicorn with many symbolic qualities, both religious and secular. As well as representing purity and chastity it was often seen as a symbol for Christ.

Once accepted into Medieval Europe the unicorn quickly became an important element in art, including tapestries and textiles. The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries, for example, represent the mythical beasts’ relation with purity, as well as the myth that the unicorn could only be tamed by a virgin.

During the Middle Ages tapestries were commonplace amongst the aristocracy, often being used to add color to drab interiors and provide warmth. The most common designs were biblical allegories, although with the rising prominence of unicorns in art they soon came to be used as subject matter.

The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are among the most beautiful and captivating masterpieces of unicorn art. They were undiscovered until 1844 when they were found by French historian Proper Merimee in Boussac Castle. The novelist Georges Sands brought them to public attention in her novels . Badly damaged by damp, they were bought by The Cluny Museum in Paris in 1853 and restored. They are now displayed in their own circular room at the museum.

The designer and weavers of the Lady and the Unicorn series are unknown but experts estimate they were woven in the late 15th century. It is thought that the series were commissioned by the Le Viste family, of which the head was Jean Le Viste, a nobleman in the court of King Charles VII, as the coat of arms on the standards, including the lion and the unicorn, represented the family.

The decorative floral background of each tapestry is the same. The Mille Fleurs pattern, meaning the thousand flowers is a style most associated with the Bruges and Brussels areas of Flanders in Belgium so it is widely thought that the tapestries were made there.

The beautifully woven tapestries use the Lhalluin weaving techniques with bold colors and intricate detailing. Each tapestry features the same subjects, a lady and the mythical unicorn. A lion also appears in each scene. However the theme for each is slightly different. The inclusion of other animals a rabbit, birds, a monkey adds to the world of fantasy and complement the enigmatic images.

The six tapestries are said to represent the five senses Taste, hearing, sight, smell and touch with the sixth often interpreted as love.

In the sight tapestry a woman is seen holding a mirror, the ubiquitous unicorn reflected in its glass. The tapestry representing hearing sees the woman playing a musical instrument, the lion and the unicorn standing at either side framing the scene. In the third tapestry the lady is seen taking a piece of candy as a celebration of taste. The lion and the unicorn once again feature, lying on their back. Representing touch, in the fourth tapestry the lady holds the unicorns horn as the lion looks on. In the fifth tapestry we see the lady making a wreath of fresh flowers. The lion and unicorn once again frame the scene whilst a monkey smells one of the flowers demonstrating the theme.

Adorned by the words A Mon Seul Desir meaning to my soul desire, the sixth tapestry in the series is larger than the rest and differs in theme. The tapestry depicts a lady holding a necklace whilst her maidservant holds an open chest. A tent in the image is said to represent the ladys soul desire, which she is about to enter.

Some interpretations see the tapestries as representing virginity, based on an ancient myth that only a pure virgin could tame the unicorn. Others interpretation sees the lady putting the necklace into the chest as a denial of the passions aroused in the other tapestries. Yet another version sees this tapestry as representing a sixth sense of understanding or empathy. The latter explanation is taken from the sermons of Jean Gerson, a lecturer at the University of Paris around 1420.

The original Lady and the Unicorn tapestries are currently displayed in Pariss Musee National du Moyen-Age Thermes de Cluny in their own purpose built room. Even today they still exude an other-worldly charm and serenity that few works of art can claim.

Natures Abundant Inspiration In Fashion Clothing Design

Inspiration can come from anywhere at any time so say artists and designers. Keep one eye on English weather for it too can change at any time. It, nature has been the subject matter of many period artists the world over, through to the famous Bloomsbury Group of London; even in modern times, fashion designers draw from archived or active inspiration from nature.

The hills and valleys become a collage of colours as the sun stoops through the clouds at timely intervals, intervened by even more timely rain.

A very famous depiction of nature at its best, the Willow pattern, no doubt the most copied crockery style in history. Thus avoids any illusion of the contribution Britain has made to everlasting styles, albeit, seemingly borrowed from the orient.

India and the orient have never been to far from our English shores, brought even closer through the advent of internet, shedding light expressly on foreign cultures’ natures’ influences now seen in clothing and accessories.

As far drawn as the Polynesian isles, Hibiscus flower were ferried to fashion houses. More recently straight off the catwalk men’s floral suits, again using Hibiscus ready to be watered down for high street store conservatism. Keep one eye on the weather it can change at any time, perhaps a return of dandyism is immanent.

Now for a change in tone, but the subject matter still follows a thread. To properly construct a rock and Roll song you need verses, dynamic lifts (a change of chord placement at certain intervals) a chorus, bridge interlude (instrumental solo) quite simple.

But the success of a rock and roll song, amongst many other things, depends greatly on its chorus to achieve top ten status. Bruce Springstein hit number one with -Born To Run-, listen closely to the song.

There is no actual chorus, but dynamic lifts are myriad. He was one of a kind and wisely drew from his own natural environment to produce art, not flowers and rolling hills, but from Asbury Park New Jersey, from its multi cultural inhabitants on the streets. A song is a culmination of many different artistic talents.

Similarly, individual artistry on canvas is transformed through complex intervention. Dyes, computerized looms are weaving silks around the clock around the world. Nature a culmination of many things becomes a prime subject of inspiration for fashion designers. The finished product in it self a true depiction of artist’s vintage and contemporary.

The silk tie an ideal medium to reflect natures’ brilliance, a subtle rendition by Vivienne Westwood is a favourite of dedicated followers of fashion.

The Point Sienna petal is a perfect scaled replication of the actual flower in full bloom. The realism captured and repeated in colours beyond natures’ scope makes it a true designer silk ties in essence.

And miniature cufflinks fashioned from gold, silver, enamel and crystal are blooming. In fact clothing and accessories in general are treading a trendy path into hills and valleys, where blankets of flower petals beckon inspiration. What is true of nature is mimicked in fashion, both constantly changing. Keep one eye on the weather it can change any time.
